ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHERS

Cleo Halls (also known as Cleo Victory) is a dance and burlesque artist living and working on unceded Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories. An innovative movement storyteller, her work pushes boundaries and combines artistic disciplines. Her signature style blends contemporary dance technique, bold sensuality, and a deliberate playful silliness that juxtaposes profoundly personal themes.

Cleo is deeply passionate about creating work that celebrates and elevates the feminine. Her work explores female and femme sexuality through a distinctly queer lens. With the intention of empowering women both on and off stage, Cleo uses dance as a medium for reclaiming femininity.

Cleo is a graduate of both MacEwan University's Theatre Arts program and The Dance Initiative professional training program. Select stage credits from her eight years as a professional performer include appearances with The Lovers Cabaret, The Gold Fever Follies, Zynth and Co, Esoteric Bazaar, Iron Mountain Theatre, La Maison Lust, Vancouver Burlesque Co., April O'Peel Productions, Wet Coast Burlesque, Gogo Bungalow, and The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret. Cleo is also a dedicated dance educator with students of all ages. Her teaching credits include Vancouver Burlesque Co, Ballet BC, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, and numerous dance studios and community centres throughout the Lower Mainland.

Rachel Helten is a dance artist, choreographer, and teacher currently based on the unceded indigenous land belonging to the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō (Stolo), and Səl̓ílwəta/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. (Vancouver, B.C.). In 2016, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at Simon Fraser University. The cornerstones of Rachel Helten's creative practice are found in deep listening, collaboration, interdisciplinary methods and unearthing the stories that live within our bodies. Her work is often charged with a curiosity of how we interact and respond to our real and imagined worlds and how vulnerable states can transform and liberate us.

In like manner, Rachel has been blessed to be a part of processes that nurture these fascinations with a vast array of artists. In her experience as a student, she has worked with Judith Garay, Rob Kitsos, Dorotea Saykaly, Vanessa Goodman, Heather Myers, Gioconda Barbuto, Emmalena Fredriksson, Peter Bingham, Sarah Chase, and Crystal Pite. Her select credits as an independent artist are working with Desirée Dunbar, Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, The Plastic Orchid Factory, The East Vancouver Opera and Voirelia: Psychology, Philosophy and Dance Hub. Her work has been presented at Goldcorp Centre for The Arts, Frederic Wood Theatre at UBC with Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre with Dezza Dance, Aberthau with Dezza Dance, The Dance Centre with Voirelia and 12 Minutes Max, The Cultch with Alley Theatre and 45 W where she co-produced a fundraiser for The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.

Rachel’s intention to aid in the emancipation and healing of herself and others has intimately transformed her artistic practice and lead her to various corners of the earth. Rachel gleaned insight from teaching dance at an art therapy centre in Quito, Ecuador. In addition, she has trained in Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Cascais, Portugal, and Brooklyn, USA. Currently, she is on scholarship at Edam Dance with Peter Bingham. Rachel desires to honour our histories, personal stories and the poetry of nature through her work.

About the works

Love Uncovered: A Contemporary Dance Cabaret

Kate Paper Heart.jpg

Bold, saucy, and sweet, Love Uncovered is a playful exploration of one of the most universal human experiences: falling in love. With a fiercely feminine energy, the Paper Heart Productions dancers seamlessly weave burlesque, storytelling, and innovative choreography into a 30-minute piece that is both deeply vulnerable and wildly entertaining. Love Uncovered puts a queer spin on the conventional Valentines Day narrative and is an unapologetic celebration of female sexuality, shining a positive light on the often underrepresented story of two women in love.

Our veins like her branches

Our veins like her branches is a love letter for mother nature. In this work, we embody our symbiotic dance with nature while mourning our violent separation from her, from ourselves and one another.  In light of our current climate crisis, this subject weighs heavily on our hearts and minds. Through the mediums of dynamic movement, live electric guitar, and real-time digital projections we endeavour to share this story through a journey of ceremony, harmony, destruction, and redemption. We explore how this collective grief lives within our bodies and the undertones of loss, anger, and helplessness. While by the grace of our tenderness, connection, and bravery we uncover the truth of our unity and the love that lives within all things.

Poetry | Our Veins like her branches

We begin in ceremony honouring the spirits who roam here. Opening our eyes to the footprints of those who have walked before us. We find harmony between one another, in the earth, in the wind, in the water and in the fire. We are one with the infinite dance of nature.

But other forces are at work. A dissonant sound grows hot and wretched in the distance. Fear distorts our faces and we have separated again from her. Our anger grows as our heartbreak scatters into the aether. Hopeless and unkind are the sounds of war. Violent are the trespassers choking our mother with a noxious fog of greed. We grow divided and weary. Mother nature cries for us.

She writes love letters in our palms and asks us to return. Redemption is found in the dirt of deep listening. Hope is seen in the sky. In the tenderness between us, we find unity. For the truth is that we belong to her. We belong to each other. Our veins like her branches. Reminding us that we are one.
